API creation and management ISV saves on IT costs building and delivering their solution with Oracle Cloud

N2N provides web services APIs that help standardize the communication among disparate information systems. The company has roots in higher education, where many campus solutions, such as student information, learning, grades, housing, parking, and identity card management software often come from different vendors, or were developed independently in-house, and thus were unable to communicate easily and securely with one another. N2N built standard APIs and interfaces for many popular campus solutions and provided support and services to help institutions provide automated and mobile-ready services to their students, faculty, and staff.

N2N’s flagship product, Illuminate, is a complete Cloud Integration Platform that helps institutions and businesses build, manage, secure, and integrate APIs on any on premise or cloud platform. The solution is currently used by over 200 enterprises in the United States. N2N’s Illuminate platform is hosted on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure.

Finding the right cloud

When N2N first developed Illuminate, on Amazon Web Services (AWS), they were surprised by the rapid increase in costs. Some of the cost increases were because of the rapid growth of the subscribers and evolution of N2N’s development team’s efficiencies in multi-tenancy, containerization, and continuous integration model.

Over the years, N2N modified their architecture, creating a scripted and containerized version to help control costs. They used Terraform and Docker. During this process, N2N was looking for a partner with more holistic offerings to support N2N with cloud infrastructure, and B2B support focus. N2N decided to look for a deeper partnership to support and meet their growing customer needs, and meet the growth objectives of the company.

“From my discussions with my team, I was advised that the only time we heard from AWS was payment related matters. Oracle looks at things holistically, and enables us to synergistically leverage relationships, infrastructure, architecture, channel relationships, and sales support, in an integrated enterprise ready platform,” said Kiran Kodithala, founder and CEO of N2N Services.

“Based on N2N's past bills with AWS and current bill with Oracle - N2N's cost for hosting has been reduced by 40% over the last year. These cost savings were realized by building a better architecture on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, and by collaborating with the Oracle and Keste teams and reducing legacy inefficiencies from N2N's previous hosting topology,” Kiran continued.

N2N worked with Oracle partner Keste on the migration of their solution stack, which includes dozens of Oracle Linux, MySQL, and Mongodb. Development, test, and production environments for Illuminate were moved to Oracle Cloud Infrastructure.

Oracle Partnership

N2N found Oracle’s technical support to be superior, and more personal. In addition, they built relationships with Oracle’s sales and marketing organization to address the needs of joint customers.

"For a higher education institution looking to move workloads off-premise, Oracle's Cloud Infrastructure offers some unique benefits. Oracle's database offerings are pervasive in virtually all institutional environments. Oracle is offering a rapidly growing set of its products in its cloud environment, including the flagship database, as well as building an ecosystem of third party vendors that service higher education customers from the Oracle Cloud Infrastructure environment. N2N Services' Illuminate product, an API management platform, is now hosted in Oracle Cloud. Institutions utilizing Oracle's database products or hosting their own applications in Oracle Cloud Infrastructure can leverage 'on network' connectivity and Oracle's enterprise focus in building and hosting these systems," said Joel Dunn, CTO of N2N Services.
